A proposal for our two-lane main gate: no barrier at the mouth. An ANPR camera on each lane reads every plate right at the entrance, and the two boom barriers sit side by side at the inner line, a few car-lengths in. The space between mouth and arms is the setback — any queue lives there, on our own property. Non-residents — visitors, deliveries, tankers, school buses — keep to the left lane (the upper one in this view), where a guard always verifies them inside the setback. Residents may use either lane: the cameras clear them wherever they're seen, so the other lane runs as an express lane on a rolling green. And at peak, a second guard can clear easy cases out of the queue and wave them across — scenario 7 shows it. A human stays in the loop for everything the system can't decide.

A fair challenge from the team: won't a boom barrier at the entrance clog traffic? Yes — it will. That's why this design doesn't have one. Here's the same gate drawn both ways.
To be fair to the other side: an outer barrier does buy three real things. Here they are, with what covers them instead.
Two arms in series form an airlock — a breach is boxed between them. Instead: the counting loop detects the breach instantly, cameras lock on, the guard intercepts inside. If the committee ever wants hard containment, add a second arm to one lane, set back — never at the mouth.
An outer arm forces single-file entry, which makes counting trivial. Instead: the counting loop at each inner arm does the same arithmetic without stopping anyone at the street.
An outer arm refuses entry before a vehicle is on GOA property. Instead: the setback is still our property — a refusal there is enforceable, photographed, and leaves forward via the exit-road U-turn, never in reverse. Nothing is gained by moving the argument onto the road.
A gate is judged on its worst day, not its best. Each of these has a planned, boring answer.
A second car slips through the express arm behind a legitimate one — the arm can't drop on it (safety interlock). The counting loop flags two-on-one-opening instantly: alarm at the console, cameras already have plate and faces, the guard intercepts inside. Detected and documented, not silently absorbed. Scenario 5 shows it, honestly.
Mud, a bent plate, a fancy font. Low-confidence reads simply leave the arm down: the guard matches the car manually against the registry from the console, and the plate is flagged for re-enrolment. Thirty seconds, not a stranding.
Controller and barriers run on a UPS for 4–6 hours. If everything dies, both arms have a manual release and swing free — the gate degrades to what it is today: a guard with a register.
A photocell beam plus the loop interlock the arm — it physically cannot descend while anything is beneath it. This is also why tailgating is possible, and why detection (not hope) handles it.
There is no hard deny and no reversing. The guard raises the arm manually (logged), the vehicle rolls through to the U-turn junction where the entry and exit roads join, turns under the guard's direction, and leaves forward. Incident and photos logged; the street never saw it.
One button on the console throws both arms up instantly, no questions. The override is auto-logged and reviewed by the committee later — seconds matter more than protocol.
The whitelist lives on the gate controller and syncs when connectivity returns. An outage changes nothing at the barrier — reads, decisions and logs continue locally.
If the verification queue ever nears the mouth, the console flags it before the street feels it. The fix is process, not steel: push pre-registration harder, put a second guard on the queue with a handheld (scenario 7), widen tanker windows. Scenario 6 shows the queue breathing.
The shopping list is short and standard — every item below is stock equipment for Indian gate vendors. The roles matter more than the hardware.
Reads, matches, opens, closes, counts, logs. Silently handles the ~80% of traffic that is residents — the guard never touches it.
Own the other 20%: verify the verification lane, sort express-lane exceptions, respond to tailgate alarms, guide refused vehicles around the U-turn junction, hold the emergency override. At peak, a second guard works the queue with a handheld, clearing easy cases into the express lane.
Keep their plates registered with the GOA office, and pre-register expected guests and deliveries — which is what makes their own rolling green possible.
